MUSI-CAL gave me a creatively rich and extremely supportive space to perform my original music and generated great feedback that did wonders for my writing process and really bolstered my confidence.

-ZACK SPOUND (composer-writer Leap)

How often do theater-goers have the opportunity to see and react to works-in-progress by emerging composers and writers? The Foundation’s consistently popular MUSI-CAL is a new form of engagement for a contemporary audience.

It’s where creators of all-original musicals receive encouragement, expert advice, promotion, and public showcase of their work in the cabaret setting at Rockwell Table & Stage.

Here people in the industry greet friends and meet new talents. When original host JONAH PLATT left for New York for a lead role in Wicked, actor-composer-lyricist BRETT RYBACK enthusiastically stepped right in to host this exciting evening every other month.

In a few short years, MUSI-CAL has featured more than 100 musicals-in-progress. Two of the works presented were produced Off Broadway in 2020; Darling Grenadine by Daniel Zaitchik and Emojiland by Keith and Laura Harrison.

MUSI-CAL has featured creators who are making exceptional progress, such as composer-lyricist-screenplay writer CINCO PAUL (Horton Hears a Who, Despicable Me 1, 2 & 3, The Secret Life of Pets) who continues to share his newest musical A.D.16 at MUSI-CAL written with librettist-playwright BEKAH BRUNSTETTER, currently producer-writer on the hugely successful NBC show This Is Us. Composer-lyricist-librettist DANIEL ZAITCHIK’s musical Darling Grenadine received a full staging at Goodspeed Opera House and was selected for the NAMT Festival 2017.

Composer-writers-performers at MUSI-CAL KEITH HARRISON (The Emmy Awards, Grace & Frankie) and LAURA HARRISON (Sing It, Masters of Sex, Weeds) have been asked to invitation-only readings in NYC for their new musical, Emojiland. Composer-lyricist-pop vocalist AMY ENGELHARDT’s MUSI-CAL work-in-progress Bastard Jones was performed off-Broadway in 2017. Composer-lyricist LAURA WATKINS and librettist NICHOLAS DAVID BRANDT were selected to be part of the 2016 Dream Works-ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop, and composer-lyricist-playwright-performer BRETT RYBACK’s new work was selected for Dreamworks-ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop and the NAMT Festival of New Musicals in 2017.

In a few short years, MUSI-CAL has featured nearly 100 musicals-in-progress.

It also generates much-needed income for The Foundation’s educational initiatives.
